Founded in 2001 as a subsidiary of Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research, now a part of the Bioeconomy Science Institute, Toitū brings over two decades of expertise in science-led carbon and environmental solutions.











The independent technical advisory panel advises on issues arising from the technical and ethical requirements of operating our programmes, including impartiality, robustness, and credibility. The full panel terms of reference are available upon request.

Toitū is translated in Te Reo Māori as ‘to actively sustain’ and was inspired by the whakatauki:
Toitū te whenua, toitū te mana, toitū te mauri ora.
Hold fast to our land, hold fast to our pride, hold fast to all living things.
It contains within it the concept of accountability, and connecting individual actions to achieve collective outcomes.
This is the meaning behind the tohu that appears on our certification marks.
